Sextortion
Sextortion
Sextortion is a crime where someone uses sexually explicit content, obtained either voluntarily or involuntarily, to extort a person. The perpetrator’s demands may include money, more intimate content, or even sexual acts.
Grooming can lead to sextortion, but the latter can also occur even when the images were obtained without manipulation. For example, an ex-partner may threaten to publish intimate images obtained during the relationship if their demands are not met.
Sextortion can lead to shame, loss of self-esteem, anxiety, and, in some cases, suicide. Additionally, it generates a deep sense of vulnerability and distrust. For this reason, sending compromising or explicit material to others is discouraged, even when there is a relationship of trust.
If you are a victim of sextortion, or know someone who is, do not feel ashamed; it is not your fault.
