The publication of sexually explicit images without consent, also known as "revenge porn" or "non-consensual pornography," occurs when someone distributes intimate photos or videos of another person without their authorization.
Some types of non-consensual publications include:
Revenge Porn: An individual, driven by spite or seeking retaliation, publishes sexually explicit images of their ex-partner. It differs from sextortion in that the person does not aim to blackmail the victim, but rather to humiliate, control, and/or harm them.
Distribution for Profit: A person sells the content online without the knowledge of the person depicted in the images.
Leak: This refers to the unauthorized release of private information, often resulting from unauthorized access to devices or cloud accounts. It may have been targeted at the victim or occurred as part of a mass and random leak.
The dissemination of this type of content can destroy the victim's reputation, affect their personal and professional relationships, and cause severe emotional harm. Fortunately, there are multiple tools available that can be used to remove these images from the internet. However, this does not extend to the deep web, which means that the files may never be completely erased from the network.
For this reason, it is very important to be cautious. Do not store private photos on devices or digital storage that could be compromised. Additionally, do not open or share a file that contains sexually explicit images, as you could become involved in a crime (see more about this here).
If you (or someone you know) have been affected by this practice, follow the steps detailed here.
